The Calcutta High Court on Thursday adjourned the hearing of Trinamool Congress leader Sujit Bose's bail plea in connection with an Enforcement Directorate (ED) case till July 14, as court proceedings remained affected by a resolution of the High Court Bar Association condoling the death of an advocate.
The matter was listed before Justice Jay Sengupta. Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi appeared in person on behalf of Bose. However, the matter could not be taken up as members of the Bar abstained from participating in court proceedings in terms of the resolution passed to mourn the demise of an advocate.
In view of the Bar's resolution, Justice Sengupta adjourned the matter to July 14 without entering into the merits of the bail plea.
Background
Bose was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with its investigation into alleged financial irregularities linked to the recruitment scam in West Bengal. The ED is probing allegations of generation and laundering of proceeds of crime arising out of the alleged illegal appointments.
Following his arrest, Bose approached the Calcutta High Court seeking regular bail. The Enforcement Directorate has opposed the plea, contending that the allegations involve serious economic offences and that the investigation is still in progress.
