Calcutta High Court Declines Urgent Relief To Abhishek Banerjee Seeking To Travel Abroad For Medical Treatment

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday refused to grant urgent relief to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, who had sought the Court's permission to travel abroad for medical treatment on his eye, which had been operated earlier.

Mentioning the matter before Justice Saugata Bhattacharya, Banerjee's counsel submitted that the plea required urgent consideration as the Court had earlier granted him interim protection in the underlying proceedings.

"Milord, this is urgent. This Court has granted him interim protection. He has had eye surgery earlier and needs to travel for medical reasons," counsel submitted.

However, the Court declined to take up the matter urgently.

"No, there are many facilities available here so far as the petitioner is concerned. It will appear in the monthly list of July. Mention on Monday," the Court observed.

Banerjee had approached the High Court seeking permission to travel overseas for specialised treatment in connection with his eye condition. The Court, however, was not persuaded that the matter warranted immediate listing, observing that adequate medical facilities were available within the country and directing that the matter be taken up in the regular course.
