The Calcutta High Court has directed the petitioner challenging the designation of Senior Advocates by a notification dated November 26, 2024, to implead all the advocates who were granted the designation as party respondents in the writ petition.
Justice Krishna Rao passed the direction while hearing a writ petition filed by Samarjit Roychowdhury questioning the notification through which 81 advocates were designated as Senior Advocates of the Court.
At the outset, the Court noted that although the petitioner had challenged the notification granting the designations, none of the designated Senior Advocates had been made parties to the proceedings.
Taking note of this procedural defect, the Court granted liberty to the petitioner to add all the 81 designated advocates as respondents in the writ petition.
The Court observed that the petitioner may add the designated advocates as respondent no.4 onwards within one week and must serve notice upon them.
Accordingly, the Court directed the petitioner to file an affidavit of service and an amended copy of the writ petition after impleading the additional respondents.
The matter has been listed for further hearing on April 2, 2026 at 3:45 PM.
