In light of the ongoing heatwave in the city of Kolkata with temperatures soaring up to above 42 degrees celsius, the Calcutta High Court has passed a notification stating that lawyers appearing before the Court would be exempt from wearing an advocate gown during the summer months.

Earlier, other High Courts such as the Karnataka HC had also passed similar orders while accounting for the rising temperatures.

Accordingly, today, the Registrar General of the High Court on the instruction of Chief Justice Sivagnanam issued a notice directing the same.

"It is hereby notified for information of all concerned that, upon consideration of the ongoing inclement weather combined with heat wave, the Hon'ble the Chief Justice has been pleased to direct as follows: Taking note of the weather, wearing of Advocates' gown is exempted till the Court reopens after Summer Vacation on 10.06.2024,” the notice read.
