The Calcutta High Court on Thursday extended till January 29, 2027 the interim protection from coercive action granted to Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra in an alleged hate speech case.

Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya passed the order after Advocate General Surojit Nath Mitra, appearing for the State, placed before the Court a report stating that Moitra had appeared before the investigating officer at Hogalberia Police Station on August 14 and answered the questions put to her.

The State also informed the Court that the investigation in the case was continuing.

Moitra's counsel submitted that she was not subjected to egg-pelting when she appeared before the investigating agency on August 14.

After hearing the parties, Justice Bhattacharyya extended the interim protection till January 29, 2027 and fixed the matter for further hearing on January 13.

Separately, the matter concerning allegations of egg-pelting and other attacks on public officials was placed before the Division Bench headed by the Chief Justice in a public interest litigation.

During the hearing, the Chief Justice asked that the various cases concerning incidents of egg-pelting and other attacks on public officials be clubbed together.
