Calcutta High Court Rejects TMC Leader Sujit Bose's Bail Plea In Alleged Municipal Recruitment Scam
The Calcutta High Court has rejected the bail plea of former West Bengal Minister Sujit Bose in a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in municipal recruitments, marking the third time the High Court has declined to grant him bail in the case.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh rejected Bose's bail application on October 13, 2026, after hearing arguments from both sides. Bose was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on May 11 in connection with its investigation into alleged corruption in municipal recruitment.
The ED is investigating alleged irregularities in recruitments to municipalities in West Bengal and the suspected laundering of proceeds generated through the alleged recruitment scam. Bose, who previously served as the state's Fire Services Minister and as Vice-Chairman of South Dum Dum Municipality, is accused of involvement in irregularities relating to municipal appointments.
According to reports, the agency has been investigating allegations that candidates were illegally recommended for municipal jobs and that money was collected in connection with the appointments.
Bose had earlier approached the High Court seeking bail and challenging his arrest. His bail application was initially heard by Justice Shubra Ghosh, who reserved the order after hearing arguments in August. Following her recusal from the case, the bail plea came before Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, who rejected it on October 13.
The ED's investigation forms part of a wider probe into alleged recruitment irregularities involving several municipalities in West Bengal.
