Mamata Banerjee-Led Trinamool Congress Moves Calcutta High Court Seeking To Hold Martyr's Day Rally On July 21

The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress has moved the Calcutta High Court seeking permission to hold its annual July 21 Martyrs' Day rally at Victoria House in central Kolkata after the Kolkata Police declined permission for the proposed venue.

The matter was mentioned before Justice Saugata Bhattacharya on Monday by Senior Advocate and Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee, who sought urgent consideration of the party's plea in view of the rally being scheduled for July 21.

Taking note of the submission, Justice Bhattacharya agreed to hear the matter urgently.

The petition has been filed after the Kolkata Police reportedly refused permission for holding the rally at the proposed venue. According to the party, judicial intervention has become necessary as the annual programme is scheduled to be held next week.

The July 21 Martyrs' Day rally is one of the Trinamool Congress' most significant annual political events. It commemorates the 13 people who died in police firing during a Youth Congress protest in Kolkata on July 21, 1993, when Mamata Banerjee was leading the agitation. Since the formation of the Trinamool Congress, the party has observed the day every year through a large public rally in Kolkata.

The High Court is expected to consider the plea ahead of the scheduled rally on July 21.
