The Calcutta High Court has requested the SIR Appellate Tribunal to consider and dispose of a bunch of appeals filed by voters whose names were allegedly deleted from the electoral roll, observing that an early decision would enable the petitioner to exercise his franchise in the upcoming poll scheduled for April 29, 2026.

Justice Krishna Rao was hearing writ petitions filed by individuals who complained that although his name initially appeared in the voter list, it was subsequently removed.

According to the petitioners, after discovering the deletion of their names, they approached the statutory appellate forum by filing appeals on April 9, 2026. However, as the appeals remained pending and polling was imminent, he moved the High Court seeking urgent intervention.

Counsel for the petitioner submitted that if the Appellate Tribunal considers and disposes of the appeal before polling day, the petitioner would get an opportunity to cast his vote on April 29, 2026.

It was submitted that if the Appellate Tribunal will consider the appeal preferred by the petitioner and dispose of the same, the petitioner will get an opportunity to cast his vote on April 29, 2026.”

Taking note of the urgency of the matter, the High Court disposed of the writ petition with a request to the Appellate Tribunal to decide the petitioner's appeal “as early as possible.”
