The Karnataka High Court on Monday issued notice to the State Government and Registrar General on a Public Interest Litigation seeking a direction to grant 30 or more acres of land in the central bureau area, for the construction of a new high court building complex.

A division bench of Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C M Poonacha issued notice on the PIL filed by one Sharan Desai. The petitioner appearing in person informed the court that recently the Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, had made a statement for allotting a parcel of land in the Central Business district for housing the High Court campus milord.

It has been reported that on October 26, 2025, Shivakumar during the “Walk With Bengaluru” citizen outreach event at Cubbon Park, had said that the Karnataka government is exploring the possibility of relocating the High Court of Karnataka to a new and larger site. Reportedly, Shivakumar had said that the move comes in response to space constraints faced by the judiciary at the existing High Court premises.

The plea seeks the direction relying on the order of the High Court in WP NO.42354/2014, wherein the Court had by its order dated October 17, 2029, had granted permission to the Registrar General to construct an annexe building inside Cubbon Park area, after a revised plan submitted prevents cutting of 17 trees or shifting of road.

The court had allowed a petition filed by the Registrar General which sought permission to construct the annexe building in place of the old election commissioners office, situated inside Cubbon Park.

Further the present plea seeks a direction to respondents for providing the necessary funds from the concerned departments for sanction of funds for the completion of the proposed new building campus of the high court.
