After Kerala High Court Nudge, State Decides To Sanction ₹10 Crore For Road Repairs Near Kochi Metro Pillars
The Kerala High Court was informed on Wednesday (02 September) that the State government has decided to sanction ₹10 crore to the Kochi Municipal Corporation for rectification works on a 3.10-km stretch of Sahodharan Ayyappan Road from Vyttila Metro Station to Manorama Junction.
The submissions were made by an affidavit filed before a division bench comprising Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Syam Kumar V.M, considering a public interest litigation highlighting multiple instances of road surface sinking near metro pillar pile caps, allegedly leading to accidents and loss of life.
The Court had earlier directed immediate corrective action to address hazardous road conditions along metro rail corridors in Kochi.
In an order dated 09 July, the Court had recorded that considering the magnitude of work required in the stretch, the Expert Committee which examined the stretch had suggested financial assistance from the State for implementation of the rectification works as there is financial constrains to the Kochi Municipal Corporation.
Subsequently, on August 7, the High Court directed the Finance Department to place on record the position regarding release of funds for the rectification work.
According to the affidavit, an Expert Committee had assessed the rectification work required along the 3.10-km stretch and estimated the total cost at ₹10 crore, including GST.
The Finance Department has further informed that it agrees to release the estimated amount after completion of the procedural formalities required for commencement of the work.
The High Court recorded the submission of the senior government pleader and has also directed the Cochin Corporation to file an affidavit indicating the steps taken for the commencement of work.
