The Kerala High Court has passed an interim order halting the conduct of night autopsies at the Government Medical College Hospital at Manjeri in Malappuram district in a writ petition filed by doctors who raised concerns about insufficient staff and inadequate infrastructure.
Justice C S Dias ordered thus, “the learned government pleader seeks further time to get instructions ...direct ..not to compel night autopsy until adequate infrastructure”
The plea filed by doctors are aggrieved by the implementation of 24 hours autopsy, which they claim was imposed based on a unilateral decision by the Head and Police Surgeon of the Department of Forensic Medicine at the hospital. It is alleged that such a decision was taken without obtaining sanction from the government and without providing adequate staff and resources. It is also alleged that the above decision is contrary to the Kerala Medico-Legal code.
The plea alleges that purpose of an autopsy is undermined when conducted hastily in an unorganized manner without providing necessary facilities prescribed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Central and state governments.
The matter has been posted to February 3 for further consideration.
The plea has been moved by Advocates P K Vijayamohanan, Advocate Akhil Suseendran, Advocate Aiswarya V S
