The Kerala High Court on Friday (November 6) pulled up former Director General of Police Tomin J. Thachankary, who was recently convicted in a disproportionate assets case, while considering his plea to go abroad to join work.

He was sentenced to 4 years' imprisonment and ₹30.8 lakhs fine. The sentence was recently suspended by the High Court, four weeks after the conviction.

Justice A. Badharudeen noted that pursuant to his conviction, Thachankary did not spend even a day in jail claiming that he had many illnesses but now he is seeking modification of bail conditions to go abroad to work.

The Court orally remarked that Thachankary claims illness when inside jail but when outside, he seems healthy enough to work abroad. It even orally warned to cancel the bail granted to the former DGP:

"If this is the condition, how can he go for the job? He has been admitted in the hospital from the date of admission till the date of release. He has not spent even one day in jail...Don't spread such lies before the Court. These type of cases would be treated very seriously. If this is the position, I may go for the option to cancel the bail also."

Earlier this week, the Court had called for a report from the Jail Superintendent mentioning the number of days in which Thachankary was actually hospitalised during his custody. Accordingly, the same were produced today.

The Court opined that the matter requires detailed hearing after perusing the medical records and the Jail Superintendent's report. It is posted to Thursday (Nov 12) for hearing.
