The Rajasthan High Court has directed the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) to explain why cement concrete drain channels have not been constructed along stretches of the Dravyavati River in Jaipur despite recommendations made in a report by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur.
The Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma and Justice Bhuwan Goyal was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) originally filed in 2024 seeking directions to the authorities to construct cement concrete-lined drain channels and provide sewage connections to prevent water and air pollution in Jaipur's Ambabari area.
In February 2024, the High Court had directed the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) to examine the grievance and undertake appropriate pollution-control measures, while granting the petitioner liberty to revive the PIL if no steps were taken within three months.
The present proceedings arise from the petitioner's allegation that the directions have not been complied with.
The petitioner's counsel submitted that despite the NEERI report, the JDA had failed to undertake the recommended construction works, resulting in the obstruction of the flow of water and hampering the protection of the Dravyavati River.
Taking note of the submission, the Court directed the JDA to file its response explaining:
"why they are not making the cement concrete drain channels near the Ambawadi area and also in the area prior to Ambawadi and in between the hills and the road going from Shastri Nagar to Vidyadhar Nagar."
The matter has been listed for further hearing on August 12, 2026, along with another connected writ petition.
