The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata, through its Society for Advancement of Criminal Justice (SACJ), announces the inaugural NUJS National Trial & Advocacy Competition (NTAC), scheduled for 2026.

About the Organisers

The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata, is a premier Tier-I law university with a consistent record of academic excellence and notable global achievements (including wins at the Willem C. Vis and Stetson international competitions). SACJ is among NUJS's most active academic bodies, focused on contemporary issues in criminal law and justice.

About the Competition

NTAC simulates an Indian trial court to bridge classroom theory with courtroom practice. Participants work through evidence strategy and admissibility, examination-in-chief, cross-examination, expert testimony, objections, and final arguments, emphasising competence under the new criminal law framework.

Oral rounds in Kolkata: 16–18 Jan 2026 (Prelims I & II on 16 Jan; Octa/Quarters on 17 Jan; Semis/Final on 18 Jan).

Venue: WBNUJS, Kolkata.

Eligibility & Team Composition

Open to students enrolled in a 3-year LL.B. or 5-year integrated law degree at any BCI-recognised institution.

Cross-institutional teams permitted.

Team size: 3 members - 2 Speakers + 1 Researcher-cum-Witness (assists prep, supports during rounds, and appears as designated witness where required).

Format & Rounds

Memorial Qualifier: Memorials for both sides; Top 32 by memorial score advance to prelims.

Preliminary Rounds: Each team argues twice (once Prosecution, once Defence); Top 16 by cumulative oral score move to Octas.

Knockouts: Octa → Quarters → Semis → Final; side allocation by organisers/draw; higher cumulative oral score progresses/wins room; Final side by lots; higher cumulative oral score wins the Championship.

Awards
Cash prize pool ₹45,000+ with trophies & certificates: Winner, Runners-up, Best Student Advocate, Best Memorial; Certificates of Participation for all.

Registration & Fee Details

Team Registration (Memo Round): ₹2,500 + GST.

If shortlisted for Kolkata oral rounds: ₹8,500 + GST (includes accommodation for the entire team 15–18 Jan) or ₹3,000 + GST (without accommodation).
