Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University organized a workshop on mediation aimed at equipping students with foundational concepts and practical skills in dispute resolution. The programme witnessed active participation from students and was conducted by professional mediators and academicians.

The valedictory session was graced by Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal, Judge, Allahabad High Court, as Chief Guest. Mr. Sanjay Kumar, Advocate, Allahabad High Court, and Dr. Subroto Roy, Accredited Mediator, Supreme Court of India, attended as Guests of Honour. The dignitaries were felicitated by Senior Professor (Dr.) Usha Tandon, Founding Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Addressing the gathering, Justice Deshwal observed that mediation has long been part of Indian society, particularly in village communities where disputes are resolved amicably. He emphasized that while litigation remains essential in serious matters, mediation has become increasingly relevant due to judicial delays and staff shortages, serving as an effective alternative dispute resolution mechanism.

Dr. Usha Tandon highlighted Justice Deshwal's contributions to the University and stressed the growing importance of mediation as an accessible and efficient method of dispute resolution. She noted that mediation facilitates dialogue and mutual understanding, leading to innovative and agreeable solutions.

The workshop comprised four technical sessions:

  • Dr. Subroto Roy conducted the session on “Introduction to Mediation,” focusing on core principles and relationship preservation.

  • Smt. Chitra Ram Hankare led the session on “Law on Mediation,” discussing the legal framework, including Lok Adalats and mediation centres.

  • Ms. Uma Ramanathan conducted an interactive session emphasizing communication skills, neutrality, empathy, and understanding parties' perspectives.

  • Prof. Kiran Rai and Prof. Chirag Balyan conducted hands-on training involving practical exercises, negotiation strategies, and ethical responsibilities of mediators.

Students participated in simulation-based exercises and role-play activities, gaining practical exposure to mediation techniques.

The dignitaries appreciated the initiative of the Legal Aid Society in promoting practical legal education and raising awareness about mediation. They underscored its role in improving access to justice and reducing the burden on courts.

The University, through this workshop, reaffirmed its commitment to providing cutting-edge legal education.
