A Delhi Court on Thursday directed the Delhi Police not to take coercive steps against Congress MP and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam in a sexual harassment case, observing that he must be given seven days' notice if his arrest is required.
Special Judge Digvinay Singh of the Rouse Avenue Courts passed the order while hearing Akoijam's anticipatory bail plea.
The court noted that Akoijam has clear antecedents and has been cooperating with the investigation. It further observed that the investigation is ongoing and that the statements of the victims are yet to be recorded.
The judge said that in case of non-cooperation by Akoijam during the investigation, the Delhi Police would be at liberty to approach the court for appropriate directions.
The court's order comes after several JNU students levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Akoijam, who was associated with the university's Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the School of Social Sciences.
At least 11 female students had filed complaints against him in May.
The Delhi Police registered an FIR against Akoijam under Section 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Earlier this week, the Delhi High Court stayed JNU's decision to terminate Akoijam's services following the university's internal inquiry into the allegations. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani issued notice to the university on his plea challenging the termination order and listed the matter for hearing in January 2027.
Akoijam has denied the allegations.
