The Delhi High Court on Monday stayed the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration's decision to terminate the services of Congress MP and professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over allegations of sexual harassment.
Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani issued notice to the varsity on Akoijam's plea challenging the termination order and listed the matter for hearing in January 2027.
Akoijam, who represents the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, was a professor at JNU's School of Social Sciences.
The university had dismissed him from service on October 9 following allegations of sexual harassment by several female students.
According to reports, at least 11 students had filed complaints against Akoijam in May. The complainants alleged that he invited them to his campus residence under the pretext of meetings or gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them. Some students also alleged that he made obscene and inappropriate remarks during classes.
The termination order, signed by JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit, stated that the university's Internal Complaints Committee had conducted an inquiry into the allegations and recommended disciplinary action based on its findings.
The order stated that the punishment of dismissal was imposed after following due process and considering the facts and the Internal Committee's report.
Akoijam has denied the allegations.
The Congress MP subsequently approached the High Court challenging the university's decision. The court has now stayed the termination order while issuing notice to JNU.
