National Lok Adalat Restores Family Harmony Between Senior Citizens and Sons

On 9th May, 2026, National Lok Adalat was organized under the dynamic leadership and guidance of Justice Deepak Sibal, Judge, Punjab & Haryana High Court and Executive Chairman, HALSA. The Lok Adalat was successfully conducted across all 22 Districts and 38 Sub-Divisions of Haryana as a significant step towards strengthening access to affordable and speedy justice.

A heartening settlement was achieved between parents and sons, during the National Lok Adalat held on 09.05.2026. In Panchkula Court, a maintenance petition was filed by senior citizens against their sons under Section 144 BNSS Act. The matter was taken up before the Principal Judge, Family Court.During the amicable proceedings, both parties were given an opportunity to resolve their dispute through dialogue and mutual understanding. One son agreed to pay Rs.11,000/- per month along with medical expenses, while the other agreed to pay Rs.9,000/- per month to the parents from the date of filing of the petition.In view of the settlement arrived at in the Lok Adalat, the petition was withdrawn by the parents. The case stands as a touching example of how National Lok Adalat not only resolves legal disputes amicably but also helps restore family harmony, dignity and emotional support for senior citizens.

Additionally, the matter involving recent stand off between district judiciary and local Bar Association of Faridabad was also taken up in National Lok Adalat and it was amicably resolved through dialogue and reconciliation. The advocates expressed regret over the incident and the Court withdrew its previous observations recorded in a case, thereby restoring harmony and cordial relations between the Bench and the Bar.

Justice Deepak Sibal reviewed and monitored the functioning of the National Lok Adalat across the State and emphasized upon ensuring a litigant-friendly, efficient and result-oriented approach by all Lok Adalat Benches so that maximum disputes could be resolved through consensus and reconciliation. His Lordship reiterated that National Lok Adalat serves as an effective platform for providing inexpensive, expeditious and harmonious resolution of disputes while strengthening public confidence in the justice delivery system.

Under the directions of Executive Chairman, HALSA, continuous monitoring of the proceedings of Lok Adalats was done throughout the State through video conferencing.

The National Lok Adalat, including pre-Lok Adalat sittings, witnessed disposal of 4,25,746 cases involving a wide variety of disputes. The massive response received from litigants reflected growing public faith in the mechanism of Lok Adalat as an effective mode of alternative dispute resolution. The settlements arrived at during the Lok Adalat not only saved valuable time and litigation expenses of the parties but also substantially contributed towards reducing pendency of cases in courts across Haryana. An amount of Rs.1,08,98,47,338/- was also disbursed/awarded during the National Lok Adalat.

For effective conduct of the National Lok Adalat, a total of 182 Benches were constituted across the State to take up both pre-litigation and pending matters including civil disputes, matrimonial cases, motor accident claim cases, bank recovery matters, cheque bounce cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act, traffic challans, compoundable criminal offences and matters pending before Permanent Lok Adalats (Public Utility Services), Debt Recovery TribunalandState Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission.
