The Supreme Court on Thursday (January 24) expressed serious concern over the delays in the verification of advocates' law degrees and enrolment by the Bar Councils.

The bench of CJI Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan was hearing a transfer petition by the BCI. The CJI, referring to the long pending degree verification procedure opined :

"It is a very serious thing. The verification drive must be expedited. There has to be a timeline for this"

Senior Advocate R Balasubramanian appearing for the BCI informed the bench that the verification process has to be carried out state-wise hence it is taking time.

Considering the same, the bench directed the BCI to file an updated status report in 8 weeks.

Notably, in April 2023, the bench of then-CJI Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha, and Justice JB Pardiwala directed the constitution of a High-Powered Committee to oversee the verification of advocates' degree certificates.
