Justice Satish Chandra Sharma of the Supreme Court today revealed that an attempt was recently made to defraud him by sending him a fake traffic challan through SMS. When he clicked the link, he was taken to a website which looked exactly like the official website.

Adding that he was able to detect the fraud, Justice Sharma remarked that if even judges are targeted by such well-organised frauds, it would be extremely difficult for ordinary citizens to protect themselves.

A bench comprising Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma was dealing with a matter where the accused had deposited some money in the accounts of two police officers and then tried to commit fraud on them.

Refusing to grant bail, Justice Sharma shared that recently, a fraud was committed on him when he was in Rajasthan.

Justice Sharma said: "This is happening with almost every person. They just send a SMS. I will give you my own example. I got a challan on SMS recently. I was in Rajasthan. That because of overspeeding, you have to pay this much. I went to the website, and it was morphed. It was the mirror image of the [original] website. I had given my debit card and all those numbers. I was able to detect the fraud, and my cards were blocked. But poor people are suffering! Their money is siphoned on account of cyber fraud."

Recently, the Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognisance of the digital arrest scams, and directed the CBI to investigate those cases across States.
