The Supreme Court is set to launch a Monthly Lecture Series on Law, Justice and Legal Education, creating a regular forum for discussion on contemporary issues concerning the legal system and society.

The initiative was announced by the Chief Justice of India on Saturday, on the occasion of Teachers' Day. The series will be guided by the theme “One important idea. Every month.”

Each edition will feature a Distinguished Lecture delivered by an eminent jurist, scholar, legal educationist or domain expert. The lecture will be followed by an Ideas Dialogue, allowing selected young advocates, law students and researchers to participate in discussions and raise questions.

The Supreme Court said the format is intended to go beyond a conventional lecture and encourage meaningful interaction between established legal institutions and younger generations of the legal community.

The initiative will also create a permanent archive of contemporary legal thought. Lectures are proposed to be professionally recorded and accompanied by edited transcripts and concise Ideas Papers. The proceedings will also be livestreamed, with summaries proposed in Indian languages to widen access among the legal and academic community across the country.

Alongside the lecture series, the Supreme Court has proposed an annual “Supreme Court Nyaya Shiksha Samman”, a non-monetary honour recognising outstanding contributions to legal education. The award is proposed to be presented around Teachers' Day each year to one or two distinguished legal educationists. The first award will follow the inaugural lecture.

The first edition of the lecture series will be held in September 2026, with one edition planned every month thereafter.

The Supreme Court said the initiative is intended to promote deeper legal thought, meaningful dialogue and wider participation while establishing an enduring institutional tradition and a lasting public resource on law and justice.
