The Central government is all set to introduce a new legislation on mediation in the upcoming winter session of the Parliament, Union Law Minsiter Kiren Rijiju mentioned on Saturday. The Law Minister was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the new National Law University proposed to be established at  Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The event was also attended by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, President Ram Nath Kovind, Acting Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and other esteemed dignitaries. 

"In the upcoming winter session of the parliament, we will table a bill on mediation. Preparations for the same have been complete", the Law Minister stated on Saturday. 

He also added, "we want to make India a hub of international arbitration". 

Rijiju further emphasized that the Central government is very keen to work closely with all National Law Universities and law academies. 

"We believe in the independence of the judiciary, we want to strengthen the judicial system and take steps to make the judiciary stronger", he further stated. He added further that the central government under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi wishes to develop a strong relationship with all judges of High Courts and the Supreme Court.

 The Law Minister further impressed upon the need to ensure that justice is given to the common man. "Timely delivery of justice must be made a priority", he added. 

He mentioned that the Centre would work with the judiciary in order to facilitate the delivery of justice to the common man. 

In July 2021, Chief Justice Of India NV Ramana had underscored the need for a law to make mediation the mandatory first step in dispute resolution process. The Chief Justice of India was delivering his keynote address at the India-Singapore Mediation Summit "Making Mediation mainstream: Reflections from India and Singapore. 

"Prescribing mediation as a mandatory first step for resolution of every allowable dispute will go a long way in promoting mediation. Perhaps, an omnibus law in this regard is needed to fill the vacuum", the CJI had stated.
