The Supreme Court on Monday suspended the sentence of Geothi Babu in the TP Chandrashekharan murder case from Kerala.

A bench comprising Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma allowed bail to him. The bench also prima facie observed that the evidence against him appeared to be weak.

Earlier, the Court had called for a report from the Kannur medical college on the health of the 65-year-old convict.

Geothi Babu was initially acquitted by the trial court in the case over the murder of TP Chandrashekaran. In 2024, the Kerala High Court set aside the acquittal of Babu and another accused and sentenced them to life imprisonment. Altogether, 12 persons were convicted in the case.

T P Chandrasekharan, a former member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) who later formed a new political party called the Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP), was hacked to death on a public road on May 4, 2012. The Courts found that it was a politically motivated murder orchestrated by persons associated with the CPI(M).

Senior Advocate S Nagamuthu appeared for the petitioner.
