The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has taken cognisance of a complaint filed against budget airline IndiGo over the widespread flight disruptions that affected passengers across multiple routes in recent weeks.

In a press release issued on Thursday, the competition watchdog said it had carried out a preliminary assessment of the information placed before it and decided to proceed further under the provisions of the Competition Act, 2002 .

This follows a major operational breakdown at IndiGo that triggered large-scale delays, cancellations and missed connections across the country. The disruption, which coincided with peak travel demand, was attributed by the airline to a combination of technical issues, crew constraints and air traffic congestion.

While the CCI has not disclosed the specific allegations at this stage, the complaint arises from these disruptions and their impact on passengers across the aviation network.

The matter is currently at a preliminary stage. The CCI's decision to 'proceed further' indicates that the regulator has found sufficient grounds to examine whether the conduct complained of warrants closer scrutiny. This does not, however, amount to any finding of wrongdoing.

Under the Competition framework, the CCI can examine whether an enterprise has abused a dominant position or engaged in practices that adversely affect competition or consumer interest.
