Illegal Detention, ₹14L Jewellery Loot Alleged At Police Station: Allahabad High Court Orders SP Inquiry, CCTV Preservation
The Allahabad High Court has directed the Superintendent of Police, Unnao, to conduct an inquiry into allegations of illegal detention and theft of jewellery worth ₹14 lakh, cash and other articles from a person at Police Station Hasanganj in Unnao district.
A bench of Justice Rajnish Kumar and Justice Babita Rani passed the order last week while hearing a criminal writ petition in which the petitioner alleged that he was illegally detained at the police station from July 27 to July 30, 2026, without any prosecution being initiated against him.
The petitioner further alleged that police personnel and the opposite party no. 7 looted jewellery worth ₹14 lakh, ₹35,000 in cash, two mobile phones and approximately 15 cartridges.
The petitioner approached the High Court seeking, among other reliefs, a direction to the authorities to preserve the CCTV footage of the Police Station for the period from July 27 to July 30, 2026, and to produce the same before the Court.
Taking into account the allegations in the petition and the petitioner's prayers, the bench recorded that the matter required consideration.
Therefore, the Court issued notice to opposite parties no. 6 and 7 and granted the State 3 weeks' time to file a counter-affidavit.
In the meantime, the Court has directed the Superintendent of Police, Unnao, to conduct an inquiry into the allegations made in the petition.
The SP was specifically directed to examine the CCTV footage of the Police Station Hasanganj for the relevant time period, preserve the footage and produce it before the High Court along with the inquiry report.
The Court further directed thus:
"In case any incriminating material is found against any police personnel, appropriate action shall also be taken against such erring police personnel by the Superintendent of Police, Unnao".
The counter-affidavit is also required to be accompanied by the affidavit of the Superintendent of Police, Unnao. The matter has been ordered to be listed thereafter.
