The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday declined to grant an urgent hearing to Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra's petition seeking directions for protection following the alleged attack on her during a political programme in Nadia's Kaliganj.
The matter was mentioned before Justice Sougata Bhattacharyya, who refused to accord urgency to the plea, remarking, "Such cases are being filed in gallons before me."
Moitra approached the High Court after alleging that she was attacked during a political event at Kaliganj on July 1. According to her, she remained confined for several hours as protesters allegedly surrounded the venue, while the police failed to intervene effectively.
Her counsel sought an urgent listing of the writ petition, contending that immediate judicial intervention was necessary to ensure her safety and to prevent similar incidents in future. However, the Court declined to entertain the plea on an urgent basis.
The development comes against the backdrop of the Calcutta High Court's recent observations in a separate public interest litigation concerning incidents of accused persons being pelted with eggs while being taken to court. In that case, the Division Bench had underscored that it is the State's responsibility to protect the life and dignity of individuals in its custody and directed the State Government to frame appropriate guidelines to prevent such incidents.
