A plea has been moved before the Calcutta High Court seeking directions against the police practice of parading accused persons in public with ropes tied around their waists.
According to reports, the petition raises concerns over recent incidents in which arrested persons were allegedly taken through public places with ropes tied around their waists and, in some cases, in a state of partial undress. The plea contends that such actions violate the dignity and fundamental rights of accused persons.
The matter was reportedly mentioned before Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee by advocate Sabyasachi Chatterjee, and was heard by a vacation bench presided over by Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya on 3rd June.
The plea follows recent instances of accused persons being escorted by police personnel in public view with ropes tied around their waists. One such incident reportedly involved four accused persons being paraded in Kolkata's Park Circus area following their arrest.
The petition seeks directions restraining police authorities from resorting to such practices and for ensuring that arrested persons are dealt with in accordance with constitutional safeguards and established legal procedures.
The development comes against the backdrop of earlier proceedings before the High Court concerning the treatment of accused persons during arrest and transit by law enforcement authorities.
