The Calcutta High Court on Thursday expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of the Special Investigation Team's (SIT) probe in the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case, observing that the investigation had not been taken to its "logical conclusion" despite specific directions issued earlier by the Court.
A Division Bench of Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh was considering a status report filed by the SIT in a writ petition relating to the case.
Taking the report on record, the Bench noted that while certain interrogations had been conducted pursuant to its earlier directions, the steps taken by the SIT were insufficient.
"In terms of our earlier order, some interrogations have been done but those according to us are not sufficient. The investigation that we had directed to be conducted by the SIT, upon relieving the earlier I.O, should have been taken to its logical conclusion," the Court observed.
The Bench recalled that the areas requiring investigation had already been identified in its order dated May 21, 2026. However, after perusing the status report, the Court recorded that it was not satisfied with the progress made by the SIT.
"We are not satisfied with the report filed before us," the Court said.
The Court directed that the matter be listed again on August 6, 2026 at 2 PM and ordered production of the case diary on the next date of hearing.
Noting that the investigation had been continuing since October 2024, the Bench stressed that the probe should now be brought to a final stage without further delay.
"The investigation has been continuing from October, 2024, and we expect that a final shape to the investigation should be granted forthwith," the order records.
To facilitate further scrutiny, the Court directed the SIT to place before it, in a sealed cover, all materials collected during the course of the investigation by the next date of hearing.
At the same time, the Bench clarified that its order would not prevent the SIT from filing an appropriate report before the jurisdictional court in accordance with the law.
