The Madras High Court on Thursday closed a plea for police protection filed by TVK's Harbour constituency candidate, following alleged attack by DMK Minister P. Sekar Babu and his associates.

Justice Nirmal Kumar closed the plea on being informed that police protection had already been granted to the candidate.

In his plea, the petitioner, Sinora PS Ashok, submitted that he had contested from the Harbour constituency against the DMK candidate Sekar Babu, who was currently the Minister of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department in the Tamil Nadu cabinet.

Ashok submitted that on April 23, he and some of the other TVK party members had gone to the office of Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi (MJK) party, with which TVK has an alliance. While so, it was submitted that Sekar Babu came to the MJK party office at about 5:35 pm with a big mob of DMK party workers and some unidentified persons and assaulted the party workers who were standing outside the MJK office.

Ashok submitted that Sekar Babu had physically assaulted him and created an atmosphere of panic and terror, threatening to kill him. He further stated that after the attack, he was admitted in Chennai National Hospital.

Fearing that such violence may continue, he had approached the court seeking police protection.

When the matter was taken up on Thursday, the additional public prosecutor informed the court that an inquiry had been conducted as per the complaint received by the petitioner's Chief Election Agent PS Muralidharan and the complaint had been forwarded to the Flower Bazar police station.

The prosecutor also informed the court that the Deputy Commissioner of Police has issued an order granting police protection to the petitioner, in view of the apprehension raised by him.

Taking note of the submission, the court disposed of the plea.
