'Prima Facie Reflects Genuine Grievance': Rajasthan High Court Issues Notice On Farmers' Plea Alleging Failure In Crop Procurement At MSP
Rajasthan High Court directed issuance of notices to the concerned State authorities in relation to the contended issue of government not procuring crops, despite those confirming to the prescribed standards, resulting in farmers being forced to sell the crops at much lower prices and suffering losses.
The division bench of Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma and Justice Maneesh Sharma has sought an affidavit to be filed detailing the steps taken for procurement of crops at Minimum Support Price (MSP) and whether any discretion was available with the authorities to not purchase such crops like Makka, Bajra, Moong, and Chana.
It was argued by the petitioners that in spite of the crops being of the standards, the same are not being purchased or procured by the authorities. Resultantly, the farmers are being forced to sell their crops at much lower price causing loss to them, the counsel said.
“Prima facie, submissions made at the Bar reflect the genuine grievance of the farmers. It is the duty of the welfare State to see that the farmers' crops are sold in a manner that they are able to sustain their livings,” the court said. The Court thus directed the Additional Advocate General to present a status report as well as suggestions to resolve the issue.
While opining that the issue was of “grave public importance”, the Court has directed impleadment of Food Corporation of India in the matter and notices have also been issued to the Krishi Vikas Sahakari Samiti and Rajasthan State Co-operative Marketing Federation Ltd.
The matter is listed on July 30, 2026, with explicit direction that no further time shall be granted.
"It is made clear that no further time shall be granted as this petition is pending since long and if reply is not filed, the concerned officer-in-charge shall remain present before this Court on the next date," the court said.
