About the Seminar
The National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi, in collaboration with the NUALS ADR Society, is organising the International Seminar on ADR in Frontier Domains: Digital Economies, Global Governance, and Technological Futures. The seminar examines the evolving role of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in sectors transformed by technological innovation, cross-border regulatory developments, and the increasing interconnectedness of global systems.
As digital economies expand, disputes arising from cross-border e-commerce, smart contracts, cryptocurrency transactions, data-driven platforms, and automated systems frequently extend beyond traditional legal frameworks. In this context, ADR mechanisms that are adaptable, efficient, and technology-aware have become essential for addressing conflicts that conventional litigation may be ill-equipped to resolve.
A key thematic focus of the seminar is Maritime and Admiralty Dispute Resolution. India's strategic maritime position, particularly the prominence of Kochi as a coastal and commercial hub, underscores the need for specialised approaches to charter party disagreements, marine insurance claims, port and logistics disputes, vessel arrest proceedings, and environmental maritime concerns. The practices of institutions such as the London Maritime Arbitrators Association, the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration, and the Society of Maritime Arbitrators illustrate the growing importance of sector-specific ADR in global maritime governance.
The seminar also explores ADR applications in technologically advanced and legally sensitive domains, including outer space activities, aviation operations, defence cooperation, global health systems, biotechnology, environmental management, and corporate governance. These areas demand dispute resolution models capable of responding to rapid scientific advancement, diverse regulatory regimes, and heightened ethical considerations.
Further discussions address digital sovereignty, data localisation requirements, cybersecurity investigations, AI governance, decentralised finance, migration and humanitarian issues, cultural heritage protection, and disputes emerging from international sports, e-sports, and virtual gaming environments. Each of these domains presents unique challenges that call for innovative, neutral, and internationally coherent dispute resolution mechanisms.
By convening scholars, policymakers, maritime experts, technology specialists, and legal practitioners, the seminar aims to facilitate informed dialogue and interdisciplinary collaboration. The initiative contributes to the development of a forward-looking global ADR framework that supports commercial certainty, technological progress, sustainable development, and international cooperation in a rapidly evolving world.
