Call For Interns: Winter Internship At Chambers of Jhuma Sen

Are you eager to gain hands-on experience in the legal field and expand your knowledge in diverse areas of law? Chambers of Jhuma Sen invites law students to apply for its internship program for the month/s of December 2023 and January 2024. Two interns will be selected, one for Regular Litigation Internship Programme and one for an Internship Programme on Gender-Based Violence and Litigation supported by Prakruthi Trust.

Chambers of Jhuma Sen is a litigation chamber with a wide-ranging client base spanning both domestic and international clients. Our practice extends across various courts and tribunals, including the Calcutta High Court, District and Sessions Courts, Supreme Court, and other High Courts. We specialize in a variety of legal domains, including Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Civil Laws (including matrimonial disputes, custody disputes, property disputes, testamentary and intestate succession, and contractual disputes), Intellectual Property Rights, Arbitration and Conciliation, Commercial and Government Contract drafting, and Human Rights Law.

Prakruthi Trust is an NGO that works in the realm of women and child rights and deals with cases pertaining to child sexual abuse and trafficking, among others. Prakruthi will be supporting one of the interns under the Internship Programme on Gender-Based Violence and Litigation.

Internship Description: As an intern, you will have the opportunity to:

  1. Attend Courts to observe legal proceedings and gain practical insights into courtroom practices.
  2. Assist in case filing to understand the intricacies of case preparation and documentation.
  3. Engage in drafting and research tasks to develop critical legal research and writing skills.

Qualifications: To be eligible for this internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in at least the 2nd Year of 3 Year LL.B programme or in the 4th Year of 5 Year BA.LL.B/BBA.LL.B Programme.
  • Demonstrate excellent research and writing skills.
  • Exhibit a passion for law and a commitment to learning and growing in a dynamic legal environment.
  • Special Note: For Internship Programme on Gender Based Violence and Litigation supported by Prakruthi Trust, excellent research and writing skills on women’s rights, particularly on gender based violence is required from the prospective candidate.

Compensation: For Regular Litigation Internship a basic compensation towards conveyance will be provided. For the Internship Programme on Gender Based Violence and Litigation, supported by Prakruthi Trust, a consolidated compensation of Rs. 10,000/- (Rupees Ten Thousand only) will be provided.

Application Procedure: Prospective interns are required to prepare a comprehensive application package, including:

  1. Your CV highlighting your academic and extracurricular achievements.
  2. A well-crafted cover letter explaining your motivation for applying and how this internship aligns with your career goals.
  3. A writing sample not exceeding 3000 words showcasing your legal research and writing abilities.
  4. Special Note: For prospective candidates seeking to apply for the
    Internship Programme on Gender Based Violence and Litigation
    supported by Prakruthi Trust, the writing sample must be on any relevant issue on gender-based violence, or gender justice, broadly understood.

In your email subject line, please specify the tenure of your internship, indicating the proposed start date for your internship. Please be informed that interns need to commit to a minimum period of 6 weeks. In exceptional circumstances, 4 weeks/1 month internship may be accommodated.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview (in person or over Zoom). Only successful candidates will be contacted/notified. If you do not receive any response by 30th October, then consider that your application has been unsuccessful.
