CJI Surya Kant To Preside NLSIU Convocation; Arundhati Nag To Be Chief Guest
The NLSIU students had earlier opposed the CJI being the Chief Guest of the ceremony.
The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, has officially confirmed that Chief Justice of India Surya Kant will attend the convocation ceremony of the outgoing batch on October 17.
An official communication from the University stated that the CJI will preside over the ceremony in the capacity as the Chancellor of the NLSIU. However, the Chief Guest of the ceremony would be theatre artist Arundhati Nag, who will deliver the convocation address.
It may be recalled that in August,165 students of the outgoing 2026 batch, along with 409 students of other batches and 128 alumni, had opposed CJI Surya Kant being the Chief Guest of the Convocation Ceremony. Their protest followed a similar boycott campaign by NALSAR University of Law against the CJI in their convocation over his comments on unemployed youth and student protests.
The NLSIU students had also opposed the attendance of the attendance of Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra in the function.
Following that, the University, on August 27, announced the cancellation of the convocation, citing "unavoidable circumstances."
However, last month, the University revoked its decision to cancel the convocation. However, there was no explicit confirmation on the participation of the CJI.
