The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, will hold its 34th Annual Convocation on October 17, 2026, according to an official communication dated September 9, 2026, addressed to graduating students through mail.

As per the communication, the decision was taken at the 107th Meeting of the Executive Council and the 40th Meeting of the General Council held on September 9, 2026. Both bodies were chaired by the Chief Justice of India in his capacity as the Chancellor of the University.

The communication is stated to be in continuation of the University's earlier communication to graduating students dated August 27, 2026, regarding the 34th Annual Convocation. However, it has not been made clear as to whether the CJI himself would be gracing the occasion, in light of the previous controversies regarding his attendance. A fresh notification regarding the new date fixed for 34^th Convocation will likely be out soon.

For context, on August 27, NLSIU had announced the cancellation of its 34th Annual Convocation, which was scheduled to be held on September 12, citing "unavoidable circumstances."

As per the August 27 communication, all graduating students were to be conferred their degrees 'in absentia', as per the notification issued by the University in August. The decision to cancel the ceremony was taken in the context of the students' opposition to the participation of the CJI in the ceremony.

It may be recalled that the 2026 graduating batch of NLSIU, along with over 120 alumni, had on August 15 condemned the Bar Council of India's (BCI) now withdrawn action against outgoing batch of students of NALSAR, Hyderabad and had demanded an "unconditional apology" from BCI to NALSAR's student and faculty community.

More importantly, in the same letter, the students had demanded the reconsideration of CJI Surya Kant as the Chief Guest at the convocation, along with the attendance of BCI Chairman and senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra.

The NLSIU students agreed with the NALSAR students' protest against the CJI over his remarks regarding violence on the student protesters.
