NLSIU Cancels Convocation For 2026 Batch Citing 'Unavoidable Circumstances'

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bengaluru has announced the cancellation of its 34th Annual Convocation, which was scheduled to be held on September 12, citing unavoidable circumstances.
As per its communication, all graduating students will now be conferred their degrees 'in absentia', as per the notification issued by the University today.
In the communication issued, the Registrar has informed that despite 'collective best efforts', the convocation could not be held due to 'unavoidable circumstances'.
The notification adds that graduating students would receive their certificates by courier or can collect them from campus.
“…On August 3, 2026, the Academic Administration team had emailed the graduating students with advance notice of September 12, 2026 as the proposed date for the Annual Convocation. Despite our collective best efforts, due to unavoidable circumstances, we are unable to hold the 34th Annual Convocation”, the notification states.
The University mentions that it has made alternative arrangements for conferring degrees post due approvals by the governing bodies
The University has further stated:
“…The University will share a new form and the process with all graduating students to choose their preferred option later today….”
It is pertinent to note here that the 2026 graduating batch of NLSIU along with over 120 alumni had on August 15 condemned Bar Council of India's (BCI) now withdrawn action against outgoing batch of students of NALSAR, Hyderabad and had demanded an "unconditional apology" from BCI to NALSAR's student and faculty community.
More importantly, in the same letter, the students had demanded the reconsideration of CJI Surya Kant as the Chief Guest at NALSAR's convocation while simultaneously registering their 'disapproval' of the CJI gracing NLSIU's own upcoming convocation, along with the attendance of BCI Chairman and senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra.
While the BCI had closed all proceedings against NALSAR at the time of the aforesaid letter, the NLSIU students had asserted that “the fact that such unconstitutional and illegal 'proceedings' can be initiated by a statutory body against students and faculty members of a public university in the first place does not alter the nature or the larger impact of such actions."
