The Supreme Court will hear today petitions challenging police and paramilitary actions against Delhi protesters.
The petitions allege mass illegal detentions, assault of protesters, and arbitrary shutdown of metro services.
A bench of CJI Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana will hear the matters. Certain contempt petitions have also been filed alleging violation of the Supreme Court's October 9 order, which prohibited the blanket shutdown of metro and train services to handle the protests.
A bench of Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana had held an urgent sitting last Sunday to hear the matter. Following the hearing, the bench issued a direction that there should be no illegal detention of unarmed citizens, no blanket disruption of transport services and internet shutdown. The bench also directed that lawyers, journalists and other professionals should not be impeded from discharging their professional duties.
The petitioners are CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby, Adv Shailendra Mani Tripathi, RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha, Professor Apoorvanand, Priya Mishra, Samriddhi Das etc.
Senior Advocate Menaka Guruswamy has filed a habeas corpus petition against the mass detentions. The Supreme Court Bar Association as well as the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association have filed separate petitions over police actions against lawyers.

The petitions have been adjourned to Thursday.
CJI Surya Kant said that Justice V Mohana is attending the proceedings despite being unwell. Senior Adv Gopal Sankaranarayanan, for the petitioners, then proposed that the matter be adjourned, saying that it was likely to take some time and the petitioners do not wish to tax the judge who is not well.
The petitions were accordingly adjourned.
