A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) plea has moved before the Allahabad High Court seeking the constitution of a Judicial Monitoring Committee to collect details of all the persons missing after the stampede broke out at Maha Kumbh (Prayagraj) on January 29.
The matter, filed on Tuesday (February 4), was mentioned before the Chief Justice's court on Wednesday (February 5) for an early listing. In response, Chief Justice Arun Bhansali remarked, "We'll see." As of the Tuesday Causelist, the matter has not yet been listed.
The PIL petitioner referred to reports suggesting that the bodies of the stampede victims are being stored in appalling conditions. They are reportedly left on the floor, wrapped in gunny bags, with no provisions for refrigeration, leading to decomposition.
A day before this PIL was filed in the HC, the Supreme Court on Monday (February 3) refused to entertain a PIL seeking action against Uttar Pradesh state officials for the stampede.
The Court asked the petitioner, Advocate Vishal Tiwari, to approach the Allahabad High Court.
"It is an unfortunate incident, something which is of concern, but go to the High Court. There is already a judicial commission constituted" CJI told Tiwari, who said that stampede incidents were becoming regular.
The stampede occurred in the early hours of January 29, reportedly killing 30 -39 persons. The affected area was the Sangam holy dip point. The News Minute's ground investigation report claims that the death toll is possibly closer to 79.
The UP Government has formed a three-member judicial commission, chaired by retired Allahabad High Court judge Justice Harsh Kumar, to probe the January 29 stampede. The panel has invited people to provide information regarding the incident.
