The Bombay High Court on Friday (May 8) orally remarked that it hopes that the dispute between industrialist Anil Ambani and Republic TV and its editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami over allegedly objectionable reporting on the former can be settled amicably.

The court further asked the channel to consider the allegedly objectionable content flagged by Ambani.

The court was hearing a defamation suit filed by Industrialist Anil Ambani against Republic TV and its editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami, over the objectionable reporting by the channel regarding ongoing investigations against Ambani.

Last month the court had orally told the channel and Goswami, to avoid using disparaging adjectives while reporting on Ambani and investigations involving Reliance group of companies. Notably, the court had earlier asked Ambani to furnish a proper list of objectionable content in the channel's reporting so that a settlement could be arrived.

During the hearing today, Justice Arif Doctor orally remarked that the issue must be put an end to, which was agreed to by senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani appearing for Goswami. He further added that the plaintiff (Ambani) had submitted some allegedly objectionable material to the defendant only day before yesterday.

To this the court orally said, "You consider what they have given and I am very hopeful that things will settle".

Meanwhile advocate Mayur Khandeparkar appearing for Ambani pointed to the list of objectionable material which has been pulled out from the Republic channel's reporting.

Khandeparkar said, "We asked them to tailor the videos and remove them...There are better things to report". To this the court remarked that it was sure that the defendant will consider the issue in the right spirit as it should be.

"...the matter can be put to quiet. And this entire suit can be disposed of," it added.

The court thereafter in its order dictated, "Counsel for defendant submits that only two days ago, objectionable material was pointed out. They seek adjournment for further instructions".

At this stage Jethmalani said, "Milords, there is much more material to report but we have not against this gentleman". The court however remarked that the channel must report "whatever is necessary" but ensure it does not use "objectionable adjectives".

The matter is listed after summer vacation.
