The Kerala government informed the High Court on Thursday (08 January) that a notification has been issued by the Special Secretary, Government of Kerala, Environment Department constituting Ashtamudi Wetland Management Unit.

The submissions were made before the division bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Syam Kumar V M which was considering a contempt petition for non-compliance of its judgement dated July, 2025.

The Court had directed constitution of a Management Unit within a period of 2 months, after issuing an official notification in this regard. It had also said that the Unit must have its first meeting within 2 months of the notification so as to decide on procedural formality for regulating its business.

The bench had yesterday clarified that the constitution of the Management Unit for Conservation of Ashtamudi Wetland does not require the creation of new posts as submitted by the Government.

After issuing the clarification, the Court had directed the State to issue notification constituting the Management Unit within 7 January, 2026.

Pursuant to this direction, the State has issued the order constituting the Ashtamudi Management Unit with the District Collector as the Chairperson.

After the issuance of the order was communicated by the State, the counsel for the petitioner has submitted that other aspects mentioned in the judgment apart from the constitution of Management Unit are also not yet complied by the State.

The Court thus posted the matter on 22 January to consider the other aspects.
