The Madhya Pradesh High Court has expressed displeasure over the failure of the postal department to dispatch court notices issued over a month ago, calling the situation 'shocking' and directing the Registry to issue fresh notices with a new date of appearance.
While hearing a review petition, the court noted that the notice issued to the respondent on October 14, 2025, was neither received back nor served to the party.
Notably, the official posting tracking system also showed 'no booking information', despite the consignment number having been generated.
The court noted that similar issues were occurring in multiple cases, where the postal website repeatedly displayed 'consignment not found' even though consignment numbers were issued.
To clarify the discrepancy, the court summoned the Sub-Postmaster of the High Court branch Post Office, who admitted that the consignment had not been dispatched at all.
The division bench of Chief Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Justice Vinay Saraf observed;
"It is really shocking that when the notice was given to the Post Office on 04.11.2025, still the consignment has not been dispatched. Whatever, the personal difficulties of the Post Office may be, but they cannot keep the letters in their office for weeks together".
Therefore, the bench directed;
"Office is directed that in future they shall submit a specific report that when the notice was handed over to the Post Office and if the details of the consignment is not reflected on the official website of the post office, then whether the notice has been actually dispatched by the Post office or not. The Office is directed to take back the notice from the Post Office & issue fresh notice with new date of appearance".
The case was listed for December 15, 2025.
