The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the installation of CCTV cameras outside the residence of political leader and Ration scam accused Shahjahan Sheikh in order to gather information on his whereabouts.
A single bench of Justice Jay Sengupta passed these directions in a plea by the Enforcement Directorate, whose members were assaulted by a mob of people allegedly on Sheikh's instructions when they had gone to raid his home in connection with the Ration Scam.
Let the present investigating agency forthwith install CCTV Cameras around the places belonging to the prime accused that were supposed to be searched by the ED on the fateful day, the Court said.
Earlier, a coordinate bench of the Court had directed the State to explain inconsistencies in FIRs which were lodged in the local police station as a result of the attacks.
At the present hearing, the Court perused the case diary of FIR 9 of 2024 which was filed as a result of the attacks, and directed the State to submit the case diary for the related FIR 8 of 2024 as well.
ASG SV Raju and DSG Dhiraj Trivedi for the ED had approached the Court claiming that while the ED was going to conduct their raid on Sheikh's residence, they found his premises locked and were unable to contact him, till a mob of around 3000 people began attacking the agency's members with sticks and stones.
The matter was kept for further hearing on 17th January 2024.
