The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday heard a petition filed by the family of the RG Kar rape and murder victim, with a Division Bench observing that it would first examine whether there remains any scope for further investigation in the case before proceeding further.
A Division Bench of Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh directed that the matter be listed again on May 21 for further hearing. Notably, this division bench was holding a fresh hearing after a division bench of Justices Rajasekhar Mantha and Rai Chattopadhyay recused from hearing the matter.
During the course of the proceedings, the Bench underscored the importance of preserving the alleged place of occurrence and observed that the site must continue to remain sealed. It questioned the CBI officer in charge of the probe on whether all sensitive sites in relation to the incident had been sealed or if more sites needed to be sealed.
The Central Bureau of Investigation informed the Court that the site in question has already been secured, and no further sites needed to be sealed.
The petition has been moved by the victim's family in connection with the RG Kar case, which had triggered widespread public outrage and multiple proceedings before the High Court following allegations surrounding the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The matter has now been adjourned for hearing on Thursday (21st May).
