SCBA Requests Judges To Scrap Sequencing System Or To Show It In Supplementary List

The Supreme Court Bar Association recently reiterated before Supreme Court judges the Bar's longstanding demand for doing away with the hearing sequence of matters. A suggestion to include the sequence in the supplementary cause list was also put forth by the SCBA.

Speaking at the felicitation function organized by SCBA on July 21 for the 5 newly appointed judges of the Supreme Court, SCBA President and Senior Advocate Vikas Singh said,

"We have had no sequencing in this court for 70 years since the Supreme Court came to function. That is, from 1950 to 2020. And the Court functioned very well. Now that 5 Hon'ble Judges are joining this Court now, we request atleast the new judges that please in your court, ensure that there is no sequencing. Our request with the Hon'ble Chief Justice is already pending."

Advocate-on-Record Pragya Baghel (SCBA Secretary) also reiterated the "long standing" request for removal of sequencing, while expressing gratitude to CJI Surya Kant for addressing the demand for enhanced women representation on the bench of the Supreme Court.

Later, Advocate Meenesh Dubey (SCBA Joint Secretary) as well addressed the issue. Instead of suggesting removal of the sequencing, he said that the Court may consider providing the sequence in the supplementary cause list for more efficiency.

"I may join my President and Secretary in making similar request. As all the Hon'ble judges are aware that members of the Bar are facing difficulty on account of sequence, I most respectfully request your lordships to kindly consider publishing the sequence in supplementary list. This small step would be of immense assistance to the members of the Bar and would enable us to discharge our responsibilities with greater ease and efficiency" Dubey said.

The 5 new judges recently elevated to the Supreme Court are - Justice Sheel Nagu, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Justice Arun Palli and Justice V Mohana. Alongwith them, CJI Surya Kant, other Supreme Court judges, Attorney General R Venkataramani and members of the Bar graced the occasion.
