Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo was sworn in as the 47th Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on Wednesday (January 7).

He was administered the oath of office by Governor of Bihar Arif Mohammed Khan. The ceremony, which was held in Bihar Lok Bhavan, was attended by various dignitaries of the State including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The Collegium of the Supreme Court headed by CJI Surya Kant had recommended the appointment of Justice Sahoo, who was then the judge of Orissa High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on December 18, 2025. The centre notified his appointment on January 01, 2026.

Justice Sahoo was born on June 05, 1964 to an eminent criminal lawyer, Late Shri Sarat Chandra Sahoo. He did his schooling from Nuabazar High School, Cuttack and completed I.Sc. and B.Sc. from Stewart Science College, Cuttack. He is dual master degree holder, i.e. Master of Arts (English) and Master of Arts (Odia) from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. He went on to pursue his LL.B. from the Law College, Cuttack.

He enrolled as an Advocate on November 26, 1989 under the Odisha State Bar Council, Cuttack and commenced legal practice under the guidance of his father Late Shri Sarat Chandra Sahoo, Senior Advocate PK Dhal and Dr. Manoranjan Panda, an Advocate specialising in Service and Constitutional Laws. After spending 25 years at the Bar, he was elevated as a Judge of the Orissa High Court on July 02, 2014.

Upon the superannuation of the previous Chief Justice PB Bajanthri on October last year, senior Judge Justice Sudhir Singh had been officiating as the Acting Chief Justice.
