The Calcutta High Court, on Thursday (January 22), directed Jadavpur University administration to ensure no untoward incident occurs during the Saraswati Puja which will be celebrated on Friday.

The court was hearing a PIL after a first-year student was allegedly killed due to "ragging" last year.

The division bench of Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen further directed the University to seek assistance from the local police station.

The bench, in its order, directed;

"At this stage, it is pointed out that University/Registrar may be directed to ensure that during Saraswati Puja, no untoward incidents should take place... To maintain law and order, the University may seek assistance from the local police station. It shall be the duty of the local police station to provide necessary help to the University".

During the hearing, the University's counsel submitted that in compliance with the last court order of December 4, 2025, the Installation of CCTV cameras was in progress. He informed that the work had commenced at the Salt Lake campus, as well as partially at the main campus of the University.

He however however, sought time to file a status report, citing a family emergency of the Registrar due to which the report could not be filed on the present day.

Taking note of this submission, the court granted 10 days' time to file a status report.

Thereafter, the security issue regarding Saraswati Puja was highlighted, claiming that since the university is open to everybody, it might lead to another untoward incident.

The bench thus directed the university to maintain law and order and to seek assistance from the local police station, if required.

Previously, for the Durga Puja, the bench had directed the University administration to ensure that it closes down all hostels on the university campus and to ensure that no unauthorised person entered the University during the Puja vacations.
