Centre Notifies Appointment Of Justice Sanjeev Kumar As Acting Chief Justice Of Jammu & Kashmir And Ladakh High Court
The Central Government on Monday (June 1) notified the appointment of Justice Sanjeev Kumar as the Acting Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court consequent upon the elevation of Chief Justice Arun Palli to the Supreme Court of India.
The appointment has been made by the in exercise of powers under Article 223 of the Constitution of India.
The notification, issued by the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice reads:
"In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjeev Kumar, Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh consequent upon appointment of Shri Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India."
Justice Kumar is among the senior-most judges of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and has authored several significant judgments across constitutional, civil, criminal, service, taxation and administrative law jurisdictions. He has also served on various important administrative committees of the High Court and has been part of numerous Division Benches deciding matters of public importance.
The appointment comes on the same day that a Full Court Reference was scheduled by the High Court to bid farewell to Chief Justice Arun Palli following his elevation to the Supreme Court. The ceremonial reference was organised at the Srinagar Wing of the High Court with participation from members of the Bench and Bar.
