Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha, and Justice JB Pardiwala on Monday stated that the Supreme Court would take into consideration the suggestions submitted by Senior Advocate Indira Jaising for live streaming of court proceedings.

Senior Advocate Indira Jaising, through her petition had approached the Apex Court seeking live streaming of not just constitution bench cases but also of other cases of national importance. In the Petition, Ms. Jaising asserts that live telecast of such cases will increase access to courts, and will “negate the chances of any misreporting, errors or second-hand information”. In today's hearing, she submitted–

"There was a suggestion that the links be provided in the cause list. This was recorded in the last order. Can there be a status report on that? Second, the issue of having transcripts was dropped but as a more affordable option - the US doesn't livestream its proceedings but they audio record all proceedings and they archive it and it's available for later. It's a more affordable option. Further, the issues of national importance such as marital rape exception etc- may be live streamed."

CJI DY Chandrachud, while dictating the order, assured Sr Adv Jaising that the court will, on an administrative side, take the following into consideration-

1. The links to live streaming may be available on cause list.

2. Apart from Constitution Bench live streaming, provision may be made to live stream matters of national importance.

3. Audio transcripts may be allowed for access to court proceedings.

He also provided liberty to Sr Adv Jaising to provide a comprehensive note with the suggestions to the Secretary General of Supreme Court. The petition was accordingly disposed of.
