The Madras High Court has issued a bailable warrant to two IAS officers- Kakarla Usha and K Nandakumar for their failure to appear in court in connection with a case. The court also directed the Commissioner of Police, Chennai to secure the presence of the officers by the next date of hearing.

Issue Bailable Warrant to the respondents 1 and 2. The Commissioner of Police, Chennai, is directed to secure the presence of the respondents 1 and 2 by next date of hearing before this Court,” the court ordered.

Justice Battu Devanand noted that the court had issued a Statutory Notice for the appearance of the authorities on July 31st, 2023, and on that date, only the third respondent was present in the court.

The court also noted that dispense with applications were filed on behalf of the officers saying that they could not be present before the court as they were having meeting with the Minister. However, this reason was unacceptable with the court and thus, while dismissing the dispense with petitions, the court issued a bailable warrant.

The learned Senior Counsel appearing for the respondents 1 and 2 submits that the respondents 1 and 2 could not be present before this Court today because they are having meeting with the Hon'ble Minister. This Court is unable to accept that reason,” the judge observed.
