Manipur High Court Asks Union Govt To Explain Steps Taken Against NH-2 Blockade

The Manipur High Court has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to file an affidavit explaining the steps that have been taken by them against the blockade imposed on the National Highway-2 (NH-2).

The bench of Justice Ahanthem Bimol Singh and Justice A. Guneshwar Sharma passed the order in a PIL pertaining to the blockade of the highway during the ongoing crisis in Manipur. 

The bench said that despite a previous court order, the ministries have failed to submit any affidavit 

"As the responsibility of maintenance and free flow of traffic on the National Highway lies with the Central Government, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways are directed to file an affidavit explaining the steps that have taken by them for opening the blockade imposed on the NH-2 and what are the difficulties faced by them which prevents them from opening the free flow of traffic on the NH-2 on or before the next date with advance copy to the counsel appearing for the parties," said the court. 

Expressing disappointment with the lack of compliance, the bench ordered that the Secretaries of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways should appear before the court and explain the matter personally, if the affidavit is not filed.

The court will hear the matter again on July 05.
