    Former Judge of the Supreme Court Justice Deba Priya Mohapatra has passed away on Wednesday due to old age related ailments.

    Justice Mohapatra was born on 3rd August 1937. He was the son of Former Judge of Orissa High Court Justice Souri Prasad Mohapatra.

    He did his schooling from the historical Ravenshaw Collegiate School, Cuttack. He pursued his legal studies from Madhusudan Law College, Cuttack.

    After graduation, he enrolled as an Advocate on 12th October, 1960. He predominantly practised on constitutional, civil and criminal sides before the Orissa High Court and in Subordinate Courts of Odisha.
    He also worked as Additional Standing Counsel, Government of Odisha from August, 1967 to February, 1969 and as a Standing Counsel for Transport Department from March, 1969 to February, 1976. At the final stage of his advocacy, he was appointed as an Additional Government Advocate in March, 1976.
    After an illustrious career in advocacy, he was elevated as a Judge of the Orissa High Court on 18 November 1983 and continued as such till 15 February 1996. Then, he served as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from 16 February 1996 till his elevation to the Apex Court on 9th December 1998. He retired as a Judge of the Supreme Court on 2nd August 2002.
    He was also the first Chairperson of the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC).
